Cupboard Challenge

This morning I sit wondering what we will eat this weekend or if I need to tough it out and go to the store. It is Saturday. To a person who has the ability to shop in the calmness of the weekday it seems insane to venture out in the craziness of a Saturday.

We had plans to go to the store on Thursday and the kids talked me out of it. “We’ll be fine, we don’t need to go to the store we have food in the house.” I am not sure what mother logic allowed me to agree with their argument.  I will likely regret my quickness to give in when their part in the decision is quickly forgotten when they wake this morning and there is nothing for breakfast.  Nothing to them means nothing “easy” to eat for breakfast.

Do I make pancakes to head off the complaints or let them learn if you don’t go to the store it makes meals a little more challenging? I likely will make pancakes because not going to the store to avoid the chaos only to take in complaints at home still ruins a peaceful Saturday morning.
Instead I will turn this into a challenge.  My goal is to make it through the weekend without going to the store. Surely I have enough stashed up food in my cupboards and freezers to get through a few days. The more challenging portion will be doing it without my family noticing. Otherwise I might as well spend my morning in town with crabby adults.

It’s decided I have talked myself out of a trip to the store for the second time this week, time to take inventory of what food I have to work with.  I would like to make it through to Tuesday. That gives me 4 breakfasts, 3 lunches, 3 dinners and various numbers of snacks. This will be quit challenging as we are also low on our bulk beef so I have no ground beef to work with.  With a little planning I am confident I can do it, rib meat and soup bones can still produce a meal.

I am actually a bit excited.   This challenge will be helpful to get a few cupboards and the freezer cleaned out.  Not to mention saving a little grocery money and two hours of time on my Saturday as a secondary bonus!
I think I am up for the challenge. I better get working on the pancakes before the crew crawls out of beds otherwise I will crash and burn on the first meal!

Let the cupboard challenge begin!
